Sited adjacent to the University field house on the campus of Lilnois State University, the Redbird Arena is on artful composition of traditional masonry juxtaposed with PTFE coated glass fiber skin, The arena was designed as the home   venue for varsity baseball, to provide a concert venue for touring acts, and to complement the existing field house with additional gymnasium space. This program, the prairie site, and the campus environment guided Architect Paul Kennon and his staff at CRS Sirrine to develop the unique architecture of the building.
The building moss and form express the interior spaces of the architecture. The seating bowl is arranged in a steep oval polygon around the center competition court. The design intent was to create a deep "pit" about the court to encourage the home team and intimidate their opponents. The bowl accessed from a single concourse accessed from grade. The concourse is daylighted tram twelve tensile membrane roofs, The perimeter roofs are supported by arches which spring vertically and span to the bock of the seating bowl in a manner similar to the perimeter skirts of the Stephen C.O Connell Center, in order to facilitate access and egress as we1l as bring the height of the building down, grade has been raised in a slight berm around the facility. The twelve concourse membrane roofs are separated by twelve stepped masonry towers which house the mechanical rooms. The mechanical room function is expressed in the large circular fresh air intake 1ouvers in the tower facades.
 The roof of the sea
ting bowl is o Cable Dome covered with a translucent and thermally insulated tensile membrane. Daylighting of the seating bowl was a priority for the economical daily use of the building as a field house as well as the overall open ambiance of the bowl space. The folded roof form is created by a single rign of twenty four f1ying sturts creating peaks between which the fabric membrane is pulled down into valleys.
 The exterior composition juxtaposes the
familiar rectilinear masonry forms of piers and glass with the severe masonry prisms of the stepped towers and the undulating forms of the tensile membranes. The use of brick ties the building to the main campus buildings while the slick PTFE skins develop o unique identity.
